Frequently asked questions
Short answers to common questions, with links to the full explanation.
Getting started
Do I need to know how to code? No — Uniweb is made for people who aren't technical. You write your content and arrange sections in a visual editor, and the design comes ready-made, so it looks professional from the start. (If you ever want a fully custom design built for you, that's a job for a developer — but it's optional and separate from running your site.) See What is Uniweb?.
Is it free? Your account is free by default, and building drafts is free. You pay to keep a site published live, priced by the features it uses. See Site pricing.
Content and display
I wrote content but it's not showing on my site. If it's content you wrote directly in a section, you probably need to publish — drafts don't go live until you do. If it's linked content from the library, check that it's in the right folder and that a section is configured to display it. See Content you write vs. content you link.
I created an Article (or Event, or Person) but it's not on my site. Library items exist independently until you place them. Add the item to a folder the site reads from, and make sure a section is set to display that type from that folder. See Displaying content from the library.
I added an image/video but it doesn't appear. Whether media shows depends on the section type — a Hero might use a background video while an FAQ ignores video. Try a section type designed for that media, or check the section's options. See Writing content.
Sections and design
I want a section type that doesn't exist. Section types come from your design system (Foundation). If the one you need isn't there, a developer can add it to your Foundation — or start a new site from a template whose design system has it (a site keeps the design system it was created with). See Foundations and templates.
I can't change how something looks. Check the section's options first. If the option you want isn't there, your design system doesn't offer it — that's what keeps sites consistent. Colors and fonts are always yours to change — in the Editor's Preview, under Global Theme. See Theming and branding.
Why can't I drag things around freely? Uniweb isn't a freeform page builder. You arrange purposeful sections rather than free-floating boxes, which is what keeps sites consistent and lets design improvements reach every site. See How Uniweb compares.
Can I change my site's design system? No. A site keeps the design system it was created with, and the app offers no way to swap it for a different one — you can only move to a newer build of the same one, which takes effect at your next publish. If a site needs a different design system, start a new site from a template that uses it. See Foundations and templates.
Collaboration and access
How do I let someone add content without giving them access to my whole site? Share the site with them as a Contributor, and make sure a section displays the content type they will add. They manage the site's Records; it shows on your site; the pages stay out of their hands. See Collaborators and seats.
How do I see everywhere a piece of content is used? By the folders it is in: a site shows content from the folders it reads, so an item's folders are where it can appear. See Folders.
I can't open a certain view. That's controlled by your role on the site. Different roles open different views. See Roles and permissions.
Publishing and limits
Can I schedule content to publish at a specific time? No — you publish the whole site at once, with no scheduling. For timed content, use linked content and add the item to a folder when you're ready. See Publishing your site.
Can I have a members-only or password-protected area? Not currently — roles control who can edit your site, not who can view the published pages.
Can I add e-commerce or payments? There's no built-in commerce, and no way to paste in an embed or a snippet of someone else's code. What you can do is link out to an external service (Shopify, Gumroad, Donorbox, PayPal) with an ordinary link or button. ⚠️ One exception is worth knowing: pasting a YouTube or Vimeo address turns into a video that plays on the page.
How do I find a developer to build a custom design system? A way to find one is coming soon.
